Tumblr has always caught my interest, mostly due to the overally interesting content that I’ve seen on there from other’s blogs. In addition to The Many Happenings, I have created A figment, a Tumblr blog where I will share notes, photos, and other small insightful tidbits from my life.

If you are on Tumblr check it out and follow me if you think you’ll find interest. You can also follow me on Twitter because I’ll post on there once I have a new Tumblr entry.

I’ll continually keep both blogs active.

Sometimes you find yourself in a cyber-cafe, in class, or someplace where you are on your laptop and people can possibly look over your should to see what you are doing. Everyone has their usual routine of sites that they visit every day, but there are some that should just be passed over whilst being at one of these locations. Here is a list of the top 10 in no particular order:

1) Torrent/Warez Related Site – In almost every circumstance, you should wait until you are at home and in private before browsing today’s most popular torrents or new music to illegally download. Most of these sites are banned from usual popular contextual advertising networks, such as Google Adsense or Yahoo Publisher Network, and thus in order to for these sites to profit, they must resort to advertising networks condoning porn and adult related banners and pop-ups. Sure, you may be browsing something innocent like the SpongeBob Seasons Box Set, but there may be a picture based advertisement for Fleshlight above it.

2) Porn Site - This one is obvious, but you would be surprised how many cases there are of people pulling up their favorite porn site in a public area. I’m sorry, but sharing your foot fetish with the whole world is just plain embarrassing.

3) Dating Site – Most may have trouble comprehending the negative effects on your self image that dating sites have. The content on most dating sites aren’t inappropriate, but checking your matches in a public library or Panera Bread makes people feel awkward. Someone who hasn’t tried a dating service sitting behind you may change seats if you are checking out “SexyMan09″ on Match, eHarmony, or any other service like this. There is also the extremely unlikely possibility that “SexyMan09″ is the one sitting behind you, and that would just be plain weird.

4) Online Banking – Would you going around telling random people that you have $1.00 left in your checking account? Unless you have an extremely high interest rate, then probably not. Most Online Banking sites have a small font when showing your current balance, but some don’t, and there’s always the chance that someone can snoop over and see how poor you really are. Either that, or someone with good eyes could find something could find something personal about you, like your name or account number. Keep Online banking for portable devices or in the privacy of your home.

5) WebMD - Browsing WebMD for entertainment in the first place, whether you are out in public or at home, is generally a bad idea. The site is created to easily access and discover many diseases whether you have them or not. Unless you are a hypochondriac or don’t want to become one, only use WebMD for personal research related to symptoms that you truly have. Now, looking up an STD for the hell of it in public will indeed make everyone around you think that you have that STD. People that don’t know you will become paranoid if you are looking up Tuberculosis and you just so happen to cough in their general direction.

6) Wikipedia: For the most part, Wikipedia is safe to browse in a public area. However, beware that each link within the articles link to another article of the respective topic. Be careful though, before you know it you will be at the male reproductive page and there are some images within that article that may make some people laugh at you.

7) StumbleUpon: One of the best ways to waste some time is to stumble around the internet with StumbleUpon. For those of you that aren’t aware with the service, users click on a “Stumble!” button on a special toolbar which takes them to random sites that have been submitted. However, many don’t realize that adult content is indeed mixed in with other sites, and unless you set your settings to block this adult content, you may StumbleUpon something inappropriate and make many people feel uncomfortable around you, especially if it has automatic audio like a lot of sites unfortunately do on StumbleUpon.

8 ) Craigslist – Craigslist is barely moderated, and so almost anything goes. You may find yourself clicking on a Mint Condition Original Nintendo Console and a male prostitute service may pop up…with pictures. Be careful.

9) Yahoo Answers – Unless you are searching for the answer of the Universe, or something that almost everyone cares about, be careful in public while searching through answers. Each question has the largest font on the page and it can easily be seen from 10-15 feet back. Yahoo Answers has almost every sort of question, and if you are looking at one entitled, “Where do babies come from?” then some people around you may wonder.

10) Facebook – If you walk into a libary, cyber-cafe, or school-campus, you may see at least a few people on their Facebook page. This is more dangerous than you think, because not only could someone easily get your first and last name, they could see an extremely embarrassing picture of you. It is almost instinctive to click on a link saying “Mr. Smith tagged you in a photo” – especially if last night was one that you didn’t remember. Pulling up a picture that you are unaware of in existence and wouldn’t want anyone around you, let alone anyone on the internet seeing, it may be a bit uncomfortable for you and everyone close by. Stick to Facebook Mobile or browse it very cautiously when in public.

There were a few runner-ups, such as masked links provided from TinyUrl, but if you generally avoid visiting these sites in public areas things should turn out okay. That, or you can sit in a corner of the coffee shop; just make sure there isn’t a large window behind you.

I drink Diet Coke; a lot of Diet Coke. I’m drinking Diet Coke right now. I drink it sometimes in the morning to wake me up before work. It is the only soda that I’ll drink. It is the only soda that I can tolerate. But I’ve always asked myself the same question. Is Diet Coke it killing me?

I know a lot of people just like me in terms of their overall consumption of Diet Coke. I’ve heard that it is extremely harmful, but also extremely harmless. I’ve heard that it’s good for the metabolism, but could also start to kill my bone barrow until the point where the only thing I could consume would be Diet Coke through an IV tube. Sure, being addicted to anything is harmful in one way or another, but is drinking Diet Coke daily slowly killing me? I pulled up Firefox and did a little research.

Let’s start with what Diet Coke really is. Wikipedia defines it as:

Diet Coke (also known as Diet Coca-Cola) is a sugar-free soft drink produced and distributed by The Coca-Cola Company.

Duh. We know that, but what makes it diet? Well, depending on the retailer, Diet Coke will either use the artificial sweeteners Aspartame or Splenda, both “zero calorie” Technically, a can of Diet Coke will have 1.3 calories per can, but who’s really counting?

According to a 2007 study, the Aspartame and Splenda sweeteners are indeed safe for the human body in normal consumption. However, other studies and groups fighting in favor of natural sweeteners, say that they have caused certain types of cancers in lab mice. Did they pour these sweeteners down lab rats’ throats until they got cancer? Probably. Are these sweeteners harmful to humans with a lower metabolism and weak liver? Probably. Can I tell if I have a low metabolism and weak liver? Nope – and that’s the problem.

A true test would be to take some Diet Coke addict, like myself, and give them massive dosages of the drink every day until they die, then of course, test how they died. The problem is, I’m not volunteering and I doubt there would be many people that would. Too bad lab rats have no say in whether they volunteer or not, but at least they are getting some free Diet Coke, I guess.

It’s safe to say that consuming anything that isn’t natural is unhealthy. Some things are more unhealthy than others, but there’s no real way to tell if they are deadly or not. These sweeteners are said to be the most thoroughly tested products ever, and it means something that they are approved by the FDAA and are sold daily on store shelves. So, to answer the original question, “Is Diet Coke Killing Me?” I would probably say yes, but so is pollution, second hand smoke, food coloring, fats, and the inevitable future nuclear holocaust which all decrease my chances of living as well, (or whatever the hell is happening in 2012). I could resort to natural sweetened drinks like regular Coke, but gaining weight through high-fructose corn syrup consumption could be as deadly as the alternative unnatural chemicals.

I’ll continue to drink this drink, and I’ll continue to live my life the way I need to. I’m not going to go drink some 2 liter Diet Coke bottles now, because that would give me a stomach ache; but I’ll continue to drink Diet Coke in the moderation that I do now and hopefully live long enough to find a definitive answer.

Occasionally I like to go to the local Barnes & Noble bookstore to read, write, and just relax in the coffee shop within the store. It is usually the same deal – browse the magazines, browse the books, select some temporary reading, buy a coffee, open the laptop, and then sit and enjoy myself. However, last weekend, as I exited the store, I was greeted by a tall young man dressed in a suit.

His name was John and he was holding a manila folder. He had a worried look on his eye, so when he signaled my attention I decided to listen to what he had to say.

“Hello, my name is John and I need to ask you for a favor.”

As I witnessed this first line I thought he was going to either ask me for a ride home, or try to sell me something.

He proceeded.

“They are building a new Whole Foods up the street, and I just got a job there. I need this job so I can pay rent, but they wouldn’t let me have it until I showed them a valid driver’s license. My driver’s license just expired, and I need to get to the DMV today and get a new license or they won’t give me the job.”

I was interested. Usually when I am in this kind of situation I have an open hand in my face asking for alcohol money.

Despite the fact that this was a possible scam or I was on some new Candid-Cam: The Homeless Edition, I wanted to actually know more about the Whole Foods. I love Whole Foods.

“Where are they opening the Whole Foods?” I asked.

He opened his folder and showed me a professional looking memo with the Whole Foods logo was on. It had a letter of approval of his employment for the company, and he handed it to me with the location that they would be opening and by glancing, the letter seemed very well drafted.

I asked him how he got here and how he got out to the Whole Foods in the first place which was off of a major highway exiting Georgia. He said he took the city bus, but doesn’t have any money for fare. (To my knowledge the bus doesn’t go out all the way to where he stated, but I let him continue.)

“I just need $10 to get to the DMV so I can renew my license.”

He showed me his expired license, which was indeed expired, along with his Birth Certificate and a form showing his hourly wage and position if he were to be working for Whole Foods. After continuing on and on trying to convince me about his situation, I started to take out my wallet.

He paused, his eyes grew larger, and a smile was placed upon his face. I took out a ten, and I looked him straight in the eyes.

“I wouldn’t normally do this, and I know that your story is bogus, but because you went through this extreme length with your story, documents, and your attire, you definitely have earned this.”

I handed him the ten and he thanked me over and over. This con scheme he tried to pull was quite convincing, and he was probably a tad upset that I didn’t buy it. Either way, he got what he wanted, and I felt good to donate to the odd form of entertainment that I just had the pleasure of witnessing.

Afterwards we went to a local Waffle House and found it dead empty. The nice as usual waitress in there said that we were the first customers all night. This was obviously due to the fact that everyone was still Downtown partying in the bars and eating at the restaurants closer to there, but it was very eerily familiar to our Six Flags Trip. Even though we all know Waffle House makes a killing in profits on a yearly basis, are music festivals and big local events such as AthFest bad for business out of the central town? Good thing it is only a few nights of the year, or businesses on the outskirts of the city might start to hurt.

So today I went to order my Wacom Bamboo Tablet on Amazon that I have been wanting for a while. The price was right, there was free shipping, and I had a $10 gift card from a Zune survey that they had us do in the early stages of the new version of their software. So I placed it in my basket, went to check out, applied the gift card, and then this happened. The picture will tell you the rest of the story, and I promise this isn’t a Photoshopped screenshot.

Yeah, I technically had a gift card worth $9,999,999 and it was applied to an order a little over $60. I actually stopped to stare at it for a second, as I probably will never even see, own, or even smell that amount of money in my life. I would have canceled the order, taken that new gift card number, and probably ordered something a tad pricier, but before I hit submit order the ethical side of me would have kicked in, I’m sure.

I would end up telling Amazon about it before I spent more online than anyone else has, ever, but still, this was a pretty funny experience. After changing my shipping options it went down to a measly $10 which is what was really on the card, but I’m sure glad I captured the image before I went back to the normal and poor self that I am.
